CONCEPT DESIGN

Oxford based Studio Wallander is a design-focused practice for older homes and properties with character, from modest period houses to more layered historic homes. The history and identity of each house guide design decisions, from layout and function to colour, mood and decoration.
The result is respectful and elegant interiors with old-world atmosphere,
led by the personality of the house.

YOUR HOUSE IS ALREADY TIMELESS.
LET'S KEEP IT THAT WAY.

SARA WALLANDER-ROSS

Raised in northern Sweden in a family of craftsmen, artists and entrepreneurs, Sara Wallander-Ross inherited great respect for old buildings and old skills. She helps owners make interior decisions that respect the history and architecture of their period house. SW believes in a careful and sensitive approach to both houses and owners, working with patience, a light hand and a long view.

Before turning to interiors, she spent decades in the performing arts. That experience brought a detailed understanding of spaces and light, as well as the influence of materials and colour on atmosphere and mood. Rigorous stage practice requires preparation, discipline, and timing as well as unbounded imagination: the same principles needed to include the house in the brief.

ABOUT                  MAQUETTES ➙

THE STUDIO APPROACH

You bought an old house because it had something a new one did not. But characterful houses can be baffling: endearing, eccentric, occasionally exasperating. Many have clear opinions of their own, being part stage, part sanctuary, and entirely a labour of love.

SW works with old houses in which people actually live everyday lives: starting with the age of the house, its proportions, existing features, past alterations, awkward corners and daily demands. Some rooms need better furniture placement. Some need colour that works with the light. Some need a clearer relationship between old features, modern pieces and the current use of the house.

You can have both the comfort and the character, avoid flattening character, and support daily life. Practical homes to live with, visually coherent, and led by the building, rather than passing fashion.

PARLOUR PRINCIPLE                 SERVICES ➙

Old houses rarely present one neat problem at a time. A colour question may really be a light problem, a layout problem may be a proportion problem, and an awkward corner may be the trace of a change from long before.

Studio Wallander gives guidance on colour, layout, lighting, furniture and finishes for rooms that need a little more thought.
