THE SPATIAL STUDY
MAPPING OUT YOUR HOME

The Spatial Study is a focused design service for rooms where the layout, furniture placement or use of space need proper resolution before a fuller decorative scheme is developed. Using 2D floor plans, unique 3D maquettes, and joinery suggestions, the study tests how the space can be arranged and used, furniture placement, how circulation can be improved, and where built-in storage or fitted elements may help.

It is especially useful if you want more than a consultation, but do not yet need a full concept design with colour, finishes, furniture sourcing or decorative detail. The result is a clear spatial direction for your home, giving you a practical foundation for future design decisions.

The Spatial Study is useful when:

  • You are working with an older house where proportions, existing features and practicalities all matter.

  • You want to test several layout options before committing to purchases, decoration or building work.

  • A room feels awkward because of doors, windows, fireplaces, alcoves, radiators or circulation routes.

  • You need a clearer plan for storage, fitted furniture or possible joinery.

  • You want help deciding the best use for a room.

  • You are planning improvements and want a spatial plan before moving into a fuller design scheme.

  • You have gathered furniture or design ideas, but need to understand what will realistically work.

  • You want to avoid expensive mistakes before ordering furniture or making decorative decisions.

THE FOLLOWING IS INCLUDED IN THE SPATIAL STUDY

  • Pre-design house questionnaire and review of materials
To understand the property, the rooms, current frustrations, practical needs, storage requirements, existing furniture, habits, priorities and any known constraints.

  • Spatial brief summary
A short written summary of the problem being solved: room use, layout issues, furniture conflicts, circulation, awkward features, storage gaps, and priorities.

  • Two 2D floor plan options
Two layout options showing furniture placement, main circulation routes, key clearances and proposed use.
    Floor Plan Example

  • Two white 3D maquettes
3D studies, akin to set boxes, showing the proportions, furniture arrangement and spatial effect of each plan.
    Maquette Guide

  • Key furniture placement notes
Comments on what should go where and why, approximate furniture sizes, pieces to avoid, and where existing furniture can reasonably be reused.

  • Circulation notes
Practical observations on access, movement, door swings, focal points and pinch points.

  • Existing features and constraints review
Notes on fireplaces, windows, doors, radiators, ceiling heights, alcoves, historic features and any obvious limitations affecting the layout.

  • Bespoke joinery suggestions, where suitable
Concept-level suggestions for wardrobes, alcove units, shelving, window seats, built-in storage or other fitted elements where these would improve the room.

  • Written Conclusion and Next Steps
Setting out the different options: what decisions and actions follow the study - furniture, joinery, decorative design, colour/finishes, or progression to Drawing Room if suitable.

  • Email Support
